Coming to a church for the first time can feel like a big step. Whether you worship regularly, have been away for some time, or are simply curious, you are very welcome at St Agnes.
Our Sunday Solemn Mass begins at 10.00 a.m. and lasts approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. Arriving a few minutes beforehand will give you time to settle into a seat and prepare for the service.
Our worship is traditional, prayerful and joyful. We sing a mixture of traditional and modern hymns, and servers assist the priest. Incense is used at the Sunday Solemn Mass as a sign of our prayers rising to God and of the holiness of his presence.
“Solemn” doesn’t mean dreary or miserable! It means that we celebrate with care and dignity, as befits the worship of our risen Lord. There is joy at the heart of everything we do.
During Mass we hear readings from the Bible and a sermon, pray for one another and the world, and celebrate Holy Communion.
We believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. At Mass, the bread and wine become his Body and Blood: he gives us himself, nourishing us with his life and drawing us into closer communion with him and with one another.
The Mass is therefore at the heart of our life as a church. We come to meet our risen Lord, receive his love and be strengthened to share that love in our daily lives.
Each week we produce a booklet containing the entire text of the service, including the hymns, Bible readings and directions about when to stand, sit or kneel. You won’t need to juggle several books or know the service beforehand.
Please don’t worry about getting everything right. You are welcome to follow those around you, join in as you feel comfortable, or simply watch and listen. Remain seated whenever you need to.
Come as you are. There is no need to dress formally.
Please do! Children and babies are warmly welcome at St Agnes. They are part of our church family, and it is lovely to have them with us.
We have soft toys and a play area in the baptistery, which you are welcome to use during the service.
Please don’t worry about babies crying or children making a noise or wriggling. You do not need to feel embarrassed: we are glad you are here, and your children belong here too.
All Christians who have been baptised and have made their First Communion are welcome to receive Holy Communion at St Agnes.
Anyone may come forward for a blessing at Communion time, whether or not you are baptised or usually attend church. You are also welcome to remain in your seat and spend the time in quiet prayer.
If you are unsure about receiving Communion or would like to ask anything, please speak to Fr Robert before the service. He will be very happy to help.
Please join us in the church hall after Sunday Mass for tea, coffee, soft drinks and a chat.
Most weeks there is cake too! We regularly celebrate people’s forthcoming birthdays together on Sundays. It is a lovely opportunity to meet people and get to know the parish family, and we would be delighted if you stayed.
Of course. Please contact Fr Robert if you would like to know more or discuss anything that would help you feel comfortable coming along.
We look forward to welcoming you.
